The Pilates Method is named after its creator Joseph Pilates, a boxer and gymnast who also studied yoga and martial arts. His method includes over 500 controlled, precise movements designed to lengthen, strengthen and stretch muscle without adding bulk. The Pilates Method requires concentration and coordinated breathing – which strengthens both the body and the mind. The exercises follow the six principles of Pilates: Centering, Control, Concentration, Precision, Breath and Flow.
Pilates is a full body exercise system that strengthens the abdomen, buttocks, lower back and inner thigh region. In Pilates this is referred to as the “powerhouse.” By strengthening the powerhouse through Pilates, you will notice improvements in posture, energy, flexibility, balance, strength, stamina and muscle tone. Each workout is customized to meet the needs of the client, every session embraces the six principles of Pilates: Control, concentration, body alignment, precision, correct breathing and flowing movement. When the exercises are practiced with these principles in mind, you become more aware, more balanced, more efficient and more harmonious with life outside of class. Pilates can help in every aspect of life.
All movement originates from the “Powerhouse” or “Core” – The abdomen, buttocks and lower back – providing a strong stable torso. Pilates works the entire body, not just isolated muscle groups. The method connects movement to a stable core, building powerful, flexible muscles and spine, allowing for greater efficiency and ease of movement. The body gains strength and releases tension.
